Spec sheet versus COA: why the difference matters for B2B
A COA is a backward-looking lab report on a specific lot. A specification sheet is a forward-looking standard: a list of parameters, each with a target value and a tolerance, that the supplier commits to meeting on every delivery against your contract. Shoppers care about the COA because they want to know their bag is safe. A purchasing manager cares about the spec because it defines what counts as conforming product across a year of orders.
The practical test is simple. If a delivery disappoints, the spec sheet is what you hold it against. If a parameter you care about is not on the spec, you have no contractual basis to reject the load, no matter what the COA later shows. That is why the spec sheet, not the COA, is the document you negotiate hardest over. Treat it as a quality contract, and confirm whether the COA for each lot is tested against the same parameters and limits the spec promises.
The identity and grade block: what are you actually buying?
The top section establishes identity. It should leave no ambiguity about the exact good and grade you are ordering, because "hemp seed" alone can mean several different products.
- Product name and grade. Shelled (dehulled) hemp seed, sometimes sold as hemp hearts. Confirm the grade designation the supplier uses and that it appears on every order acknowledgement and invoice.
